NEW EMERGENCIES: SECURING WATER AND ENERGY SUPPLIES IN AN EVER-CHANGING ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOPOLITICAL CONTEXT

The opening initiative of the events promoted by BFWE will focus on what currently appears to be the most challenging issue that engages the entire international community: how to ensure the continuity and security of water and energy supplies.
The topic will be tackled by initiating a discussion in which the protagonists of the public and private national and international organisations that, in various capacities, play a leading role in their sphere of operation will be able to explain how this challenge can be faced and overcome from the perspective of the ecological transition and the fundamental drivers that characterise it and on which BFWE is particularly focused: innovation and research, digitalisation and sustainability.

TRANSITION AND TRAINING: AN ESSENTIAL PAIR
THE ROLE OF TRAINING IN THE PATH OF ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION

in collaboration with 24ORE Business School

The ecological transition is an economic and social evolution of the entire international community that, in order to be effectively accomplished, cannot be separated from a cultural change that must involve the world of public and private organisations, as well as rely on new generations capable of facing the challenges to which they will be called.
The round table entitled 'Transition and training: an essential pair - The role of training in the path of ecological transition', promoted by BFWE together with 24ORE Business School, the educational partner of the entire event, compares the world of companies, from different fields of activity, to understand what strategies and actions, from a training point of view, they are putting in place to be ready to face the path of ecological transition.

USE OF METHANE AND BIOMETHANE FOR 'SUSTAINABLE' MOBILITY

in collaboration with NGV Italy

The energy transition in which Italy and Europe are firmly committed does not allow shortcuts. Multiple options must be put in place to accelerate the process in different sectors.
In Italy, the natural gas sector has not only ensured the flexibility of the electricity system, supporting renewable sources, but has also always made an important contribution to sustainable mobility. First with the largest circulating fleet of methane-powered cars in Europe and, more recently, with the entry of LNG and bio-LNG into the heavy transport sector, which has enabled a 20% to 100% reduction in CO2 emissions and the almost total elimination of local pollutants by trucks that have preferred methane to diesel.
The integration and diffusion of usable biomethane with existing infrastructures and engines already in circulation on the roads therefore make the methane assets present in our country even more important from both a sustainability and safety perspective, given that the national production potential is only slightly less than the import capacity of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
NGV Italy, Snam4Mobility SpA and Piccini Paolo SpA also wanted to celebrate the importance of biomethane through the Bio-CNG European Tour 2022, which the pilots of the journey will tell at the opening of the round table entitled "The use of methane and biomethane for sustainable mobility" organised by NGV Italy on 12 October as part of Bologna Water&Energy Expo.
The event will also be a useful opportunity to take stock with its associates of the actions needed to facilitate the use of methane and biomethane in Italy and Europe, a process that requires regulatory stability and clarity, as well as investment and regulatory adjustments.

BIOMETHANE: A STRATEGIC RESOURCE FOR ENERGY SUPPLY RESILIENCE

In partnership with Assogasmetano and Assocostieri

The energy and natural gas price crisis strongly re-proposes the strategic issue of supply and source diversification.
Biomethane is a renewable gas, meets the requirements of the circular economy, and represents an immediate, effective and strategic solution for our country to solve both environmental and energy problems.
The new decree, soon to be issued, provides very advantageous incentives that will give new impetus to the development of biomethane in the coming years.
Through a certification system, it will be possible to check the actual use of biomethane in vehicles, in order to obtain the 'Zero emission vehicle' qualification.
The conference intends to focus on all the aspects mentioned above in order to correctly position biomethane in the role of great importance that it deserves, also in the mobility of people and goods on land and sea, for a truly sustainable energy transition, to be promoted and incentivised.

INNOVATION AND RESEARCH FOR CARBON-FREE SMART CITIES

On the second day of the "strategic sessions" of BolognaFiere Water & Energy - BFWE - the path along the road to ecological transition continues to dwell on another diriment theme: the present and future of our cities, naturally carbon free.
Again through the lens of innovation and research, digitalisation and sustainability, institutions and companies together with exponents of the world of research will meet to examine, each for their own areas of competence, operational programmes to achieve the underlying objective: to make the cities in which we will live environmentally sustainable. An imperative objective that will also profoundly affect the business logic of private organisations.

GAS MOBILITY: A CONSTANTLY DEVELOPING REALITY WORLDWIDE

Promoted by NGV Italy

Methane-based fuel is an important alternative that has the potential to improve a region’s energy security and lower greenhouse gas emissions, especially when it contains advanced, sustainable biogas. Its use in transportation has been limited in many Countries due to lack of infrastructure, relatively short driving range, wide variations in fuel quality and the need for vehicle and engine adaptation. However, the recent rapid rise in methane production through new techniques has rekindled and strengthened interest in this fuel
For these reasons, our industry needs to join voices and forces on a worldwide scale to foster the role of gas(es) with a common strong narrative.

All the gas mobility industry is playing a crucial role in supporting the transition towards renewable and low carbon gases with new technologies and solutions.
With this purpose, a new association named World Gas Mobility Council was founded in May 2022, with the aim to be a new platform used to share best practices, regulatory and technical issues.
WGMC could well serve as a common basis to further promote our industry and engage at the right level with other global industry gas stakeholders and policy makers.

During this panel discussion, representatives from Italy, Nigeria, Romania, India and Peru will present plans and targets at national level and address potential technology partnerships.

REDUCING METHANE EMISSIONS: A TOOL FOR DECARBONISING THE ENERGY SYSTEM

Promoted by Proxigas and CIG

Reducing methane emissions is a strategic front in the decarbonisation pathway. On a global level, this is evidenced by the Global Methane Pledge, launched at COP26 in Glasgow, which sees the US and EU united in a commitment to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 per cent by the end of the decade and to adopt the best available inventory methodologies to quantify emissions. The initiative - to which more than 130 countries have signed up - confirms that reducing methane emissions is now a viable and effective way to reduce global warming already, and therefore has short-term effects.
At the European level, policies to reduce methane emissions are being developed through the definition of a European Strategy, the proposed Energy Sector Regulation, and most recently the EU Repower Package, in the part dedicated to the EU's external energy strategy.
The definition of a strategy to reduce methane emissions is therefore a key element in the broader energy transition pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.
The session dedicated to emissions reduction will see the CIG and Proxigas give an overview of current legislation, illustrate the reference scenario and the prospects for evolution, and represent the energy industry's commitment on this front.
